Are rash guards necessary for BJJ?

So you have decided to take the plunge and try out Brazilian Jiu-jitsu...

First, let me just say that I'm super excited that you have taken this chance to get out of your comfort zone. Please keep in mind that every school is different, but many operate similarly.

What Should You Wear? Are rash guards necessary for BJJ?

Before you come to your first class, you’ll need to figure out what to wear.

Yes, most schools require a tight-fitting shirt such as a compression shirt or rash guard. If you don't have that style of shirt you should wear a tight-fitting shirt. Tight-fitting clothing is required because loose-fitting clothing can be dangerous to fingers and toes by getting caught in them. Even if you train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a gi it would be wise to wear a rash guard under your gi to help protect your skin from nasty funk and rashes.

Don't be that guy...

Remember that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is designed to be trained safely without serious injury. These rules are to help keep you and your training partners safe and healthy.

I hope this answers any questions you might have about what your first day could be like at a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu school. Good luck with your future training.
